The new Aliens Act was approved by the Swiss voters on the 24th of September 2006 and has been in force since the 1st of January 2008.
The law deals primarily with the entry and residence of persons who are not citizens of EU or EFTA and are not asylum seekers. The law restricts the access to the Swiss employment market to those who are particularly well qualified for jobs in Switzerland but are not citizens of EU or EFTA.

The law defines the following points in particular:

  • The entry and exit of migrants
  • The residency of foreigners
  • family reunification
  • measures undertaken to promote the integration of foreigners
