Jewish Communities

Today, nearly 17,000 Jews live in Switzerland. Most of them have Swiss nationality. In the cantons of Basel-City, Bern, Fribourg, St. Gallen and Zurich, the Jewish community is recognized in public law and thus is on a par with the state churches.

There are currently 24 Jewish communities in Switzerland. 17 of them are part of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities (SFJC). Liberal communities are united in a Platform of Jew Liberals in Switzerland (PJLS).
The most important centres of Jewish religious life are the cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich.
There are also Jewish schools, in Basel, Geneva, Lausanne and Zurich.
There are 28 Jewish cemeteries in the whole of Switzerland
