Waste and garbage

Every year, Swiss households produce 5.5 million tons of waste. Half of it is recycled: glass, paper, metals, textiles, PET, plastic etc. are collected separately. And in many places, green or vegetal waste is gathered for composting.

In Switzerland the municipalities are responsible for the garbage disposal and the selective collection of recyclable waste. Therefore, the waste management and services are organized in many different manners. Find detailed information on local websites.

Please note
In Switzerland the garbage disposal services are not paid through community charges but by means of special waste taxes. You’ll find the communal garbage bags or rubbish vignettes at all local stores or supermarkets.

To separate waste is worth the effort: Recyclable waste can be disposed of free of charges.
